Young people with disabilities who are eligible for special education services are entitled to receive transition services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). These services can begin as early as age 14 and continue until the student graduates or turn 22.
How can I access transition services for my child?
If your child is eligible for special education services, transition services should be included in their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Talk to your child’s school or special education team to learn more about the specific transition services that are available and how to access them.
When should transition services begin?
Transition services should begin as early as possible, but no later than when the student turns 16 years old, as required by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). However, it is recommended that transition planning begin even earlier, around age 14, to allow enough time for the student and their team to develop a comprehensive plan that addresses all areas of transition, including post-secondary education, employment, and independent living.
