Garmin Bounce Watch Review

I recently got my hands on the Garmin Bounce, a smartwatch designed for kids. As a parent on the hunt for ways to keep my child active, it piqued my interest at around $150. I put it through its paces to see if it lives up to the hype.

First Impressions: Built to Last

Right off the bat, I was impressed with the Garmin Bounce’s design. The material feels smooth and comfortable and seems built to withstand the inevitable bumps and tumbles of being a kid. Unlike some adult smartwatches that feel delicate, this one feels like it can take a beating. It comes with a pre-attached band and a charging cable, ready to go right out of the box.

The LTE Debate: Necessary or Not?

The Garmin Bounce offers an optional LTE connection, which unlocks features like two-way texting and calling. However, I’m still determining if it’s worth the extra cost. Here’s why:

  • With LTE, you can get your child to chat with you or pre-approved contacts, but that’s it. It’s more like a glorified walkie-talkie than a genuine smartphone replacement. The limited functionality makes you wonder if a standard phone plan on a primary phone wouldn’t be a more cost-effective option.
  • Tracking your child’s location also requires an LTE connection. This can be a valuable safety feature, but better trackers might be specifically designed for that purpose, potentially at a lower price point.
  • The Data plan is $10/month.

The Parent App: Straightforward but with Quirks

The Garmin Bounce is controlled through a parent app. Setting it up was a breeze, but excessive legal agreements got tedious. It felt like wading through an endless sea of “click to agree” before I could use the app.

Setting up the Garmin Bounce app involved wading through a seemingly endless stream of legal agreements and consent pages. While companies need to be transparent about data collection, the sheer volume of clicks required can’t help but raise a red flag. This begs the question: what kind of data is being collected, and why is so much user consent necessary? It’s a valid concern that Garmin might want to address to build trust and transparency with parents using their kids’ smartwatches.

Feature Frenzy: Hits and Misses

The Garmin Bounce boasts various features, but some are more successful. Here’s my breakdown:

  • Activity Tracking: This is where the Garmin Bounce shines. It accurately tracks steps and can be an excellent motivator for getting my child moving. The step tracking seemed accurate during our testing, and the watch felt comfortable enough for active wear.
  • Challenges: The app offers challenges, but they appear on the parent’s app, not the kid’s watch. This makes them less effective as a way to directly engage my child. It is a missed opportunity to gamify the experience and truly motivate them.
  • Games: The watch has a few built-in games, but they left me wanting more. They felt clunky and could have been more engaging. Think picture books rather than interactive games.
  • Sleep Tracking: The watch can track sleep, but only if my child is willing to wear it to bed and keep it charged. This might be a challenge, depending on their sleep habits.
  • Alarms: You can set silent alarms on the parent app that will vibrate on the watch to wake your child up. This could be a helpful feature, especially for mornings when they need a gentle nudge.

Activity Tracking for the Win

Since activity tracking is a core feature, it’s worth exploring this in more detail. The watch tracks steps, distance, and active minutes. It also includes a sleep tracker to help monitor my child’s sleep patterns. Overall, the activity tracking features are well-designed and practical.

Beyond Activity Tracking: Is Communication and Location Sharing Worth It?

While the Garmin Bounce offers some communication features, they are limited. You can enable two-way texting and voice messaging with an LTE connection, but only with pre-approved contacts. This can be a good safety feature, but it also restricts how your child can use the watch to communicate with friends and family.

The LTE connection also allows for location tracking. This can be a valuable feature for peace of mind, but remember, the watch requires a data plan to use these features, which adds to the overall cost.

Goally | Apps To Structure Your Kiddo’s Routine

Does your child struggle with transitions or staying on task? Goally’s visual schedule app breaks down large tasks into small, achievable steps. It helps kids complete their tasks independently!

Goally kids tablet makes bedtime easy with bedtime routines completely controlled by the parent.

Create custom routines with your own videos & pictures for every step. The steps come in small, bite-sized pieces to help your child learn the little fundamentals (like putting the toothpaste on their toothbrush!) to achieve bigger goals. And that’s just the beginning.

The Verdict: A Solid Activity Tracker, But Not a Perfect All-Around Device

The Garmin Bounce is a good fit for kids who need a little motivation to get active. It’s durable and comfortable and tracks steps accurately. However, suppose you’re looking for a device for communication or location tracking. In that case, there are better options, especially considering the extra cost of the LTE connection. The $150 price tag makes a regular smartwatch from a brand like Apple a more attractive option, especially if you don’t necessarily need the cellular connectivity features.
