Circumstances/Diagnosis: Any child under 21 who is diagnosed with autism. The state requires that individuals need at least an intermediate care facility level of care to qualify. This has a technical definition but essentially just means that the individual is unable to get through their day without a lot of supervision. Children must also have an Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) or an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and be receiving at least 15 hours of special education services per week.
Income: Income eligibility is only based on the child’s income and not the parents income. This means that your child is financially eligible for the waiver if they don’t earn over $2,313 a month or have over $2,000 in assets.

This is good because it provides case-specific services, but makes navigating the waiver process far more difficult. Additionally, these waivers are managed by several different entities like the Maryland State Department of Education and the Developmental Disabilities Administration. Make sure to call these organizations to get the information you need on waiver programs because their website does little to distinguish which waiver is best for who.
