Medicaid Waiver Guide – Oregon

As a parent of a neurodivergent child, you might sometimes feel like you’re trying to decode a secret language regarding healthcare. The world of insurance, waivers, and benefits can be a bit much, especially when you’re already juggling so many other responsibilities. But don’t worry; we’re here to help you make sense of Oregon Medicaid.

Understanding Oregon Medicaid

Let’s start by breaking down what Oregon Medicaid is. Simply put, it’s a program that provides health coverage for low-income people. This includes some low-income adults, children, pregnant women, elderly adults, and people with disabilities. The program is funded by both the state and federal governments. However, while Medicaid programs must follow federal guidelines, they vary a bit from state to state.

So, you might wonder, how does Oregon Medicaid fit into the picture for families with neurodivergent kids? Well, it’s pretty straightforward. Oregon Medicaid provides essential services like therapy, medical equipment, and home health care. These services are designed to help kids with thinking and learning differences thrive in their homes and communities rather than institutions.

Applying for Oregon Medicaid

Applying for Oregon Medicaid might seem like a climbing mountain. But with a bit of preparation, it’s entirely manageable. Here’s a simple guide to help you navigate the process:

  1. Check Eligibility: Oregon Medicaid has specific eligibility requirements based on income, residency, and citizenship.
  2. Prepare Documentation: Gather all necessary documents, such as proof of income, residency, and medical records.
  3. Submit Application: You can apply online, by mail, or in person at a local Department of Human Services office.
  4. Wait for Approval: Once your application is submitted, it can take up to 45 days to get a decision.

But wait, there’s more to Oregon Medicaid than just the application process. Let’s delve a bit deeper into what Oregon Medicaid offers, particularly for families with neurodivergent kids.

Who can apply?

Circumstance/Diagnosis: Any child or adult who has a diagnosis with either an intellectual and/or developmental disability (this includes autism). The state requires that individuals need an intermediate care facility level of care to qualify. This just means that the individual is unable to get through their day without a lot of supervision.
Income: We couldn’t find any definitive information on income eligibility, but for most programs in other states this is only based on the child’s income and not the parents income. This means that your child is financially eligible for the waiver if they don’t have an income.

What do I get?

Relief care for family caregivers; • Training to help you meet your child’s needs; • Help with everyday activities like preparing meals, bathing or feeding your child; • Change to make your home more accessible for your child; • Help with behavior challenges; and • Some technological supports, and much more!
