How to Make a Bagel: A Guide for Kids

You’ve just picked your kid up from school, and they’re hungry again, for the third time today. You need a quick, hearty snack that’s more than just a pit stop on the hunger highway. How about bagels? But before you say, “Bagels are a bakery thing,” hear us out. Our Goal Mine class has a fabulous video that breaks down each step, perfect for kids to follow. Ready to make a tasty bagel? Great. Here’s how.

Steps for How to Make a Bagel

Step NumberStep TitleSubpoints
1PreparationGather all necessary materials: Bagel, knife, toaster (optional: cream cheese, butter, or any other spread of your choice, and a butter knife). Find a clean countertop or table to work on.
2Cutting the BagelLay the bagel flat on the countertop or table. Hold the bagel steady with one hand. With the other hand, take the knife and make a horizontal cut through the center of the bagel, being careful to keep fingers away from the blade. Ensure the cut separates the bagel into two even halves.
3Toasting the BagelPick up one half of the bagel, then place the cut side down into one slot of the toaster. Repeat with the other half and the second slot of the toaster. Adjust the toaster settings according to how browned you want your bagel. Press down the lever to lower the bagels into the toaster and start toasting.
4Applying the SpreadWhile the bagel is toasting, take your chosen spread and butter knife. Open the container of the spread. Once the toaster pops up, carefully remove the bagel halves as they may be hot. Lay them flat with the toasted side up on your clean countertop or plate. Using the butter knife, scoop a reasonable amount of the spread. Apply the spread onto the toasted side of one half of the bagel, spreading evenly.
5Eat & Clean-UpRepeat spreading process with the other bagel half if desired. Position one half of the bagel on top of the other half if preferred. After enjoying your bagel, clear up any crumbs and place any reusable tools in the correct storage areas or dishwasher. Wipe down the surface area to leave it clean for the next use.

Step 1: Preparation

Gather All Necessary Materials: Above all, you’ll need a bagel, a knife, and a toaster. Optional? Cream cheese, butter, or any spread that floats your boat, and a butter knife. Organize these on a clean table or countertop. That is to say, let’s get the ball rolling without stumbling over clutter.

Find a Clean Countertop or Table: Cleanliness is paramount in the kitchen! Get your kids involved in this step. Teach them to clear and wipe down the space they’ll be using. This instills a good hygiene habit early on. Don’t forget to wash your hands!

Step 2: Cutting the Bagel

Lay the Bagel Flat on the Surface: Ensure that the bagel isn’t rolling around. Flatten it out on the table. It sets the stage for the cutting action. No room for wobbling here!

Hold the Bagel Steady: Instruct your kids to keep one hand on the bagel. Teach them the “claw grip,” where fingers curve inward so the knife never goes near them. Safety first, after all.

Cut the Bagel: It’s time to slice and dice, but mostly slice. Instruct your kid to take a knife in the other hand and slice horizontally. You want to aim for two almost identical halves because no one wants the short end of the stick—or the bagel.

Step 3: Toasting the Bagel

Insert Bagel Halves into the Toaster: Now comes the fun part for kids: playing with gadgets. However, supervision is critical. Teach them to put the bagel halves, cut side down, in the toaster slots.

Adjust Settings and Toast: Let your kids be the toastmaster general. Show them how to adjust the browning settings on the toaster. Then, with a triumphant push of the lever, let the toasting commence.

Step 4: Applying the Spread

Prep the Spread: Meanwhile, grab the spread and butter knife while your bagel halves are toasting up. Make this step a game for the kids. Maybe they can be the “Spread Squad.”

Apply the Spread: When those bagels pop up, it’s showtime. Just be wary; they’re hot! Lay them flat and let your kids scoop some spread onto their butter knife. Teach them to apply it evenly; think of it as the icing on a cake, but it’s a bagel.

Step 5: Eat & Clean-Up

Feast!: In short, it’s munching time! Your kids can enjoy their creation now, and the joy on their faces? Priceless.

Clean-Up: After that culinary escapade, the kitchen will look like a mini tornado hit. Teach your kids the clean-up dance: utensils in the dishwasher, wipe down surfaces, and above all, no leaving crumbs for the cookie monster.
