How to Take Out the Trash

As a parent, you’ve been there. You’re trying to teach your kid life skills, but sometimes it feels like you’re talking to a wall. And why do the seemingly simple tasks—like taking out the trash—turn into epic battles of will? We get it. That’s why we’ve broken it down for you, one step at a time. Our Goal Mine class has transformed this guide into a kid-friendly video format. Indeed, it’s worth letting them watch and learn independently.

Step 1: Tie and Take out

Firstly, teaching your kid to take out the trash starts at the heart of the home: the kitchen. It’s where most of our daily waste accumulates.

  • Securing the Trash Bag: Begin by showing your child how to gather the edges of the trash bag. Meanwhile, ensure there aren’t any leaks or spills inside. Firmly twist the top and teach them to tie a knot. In other words, this keeps everything inside and prevents unwanted messes during the next step.
  • Carrying it Out: Teach your child to use both hands when lifting the trash bag from the can. This avoids accidental drops or tears in the bag. Remind them to carry it by the tied knot, holding it away from their body. It’s a small trick that goes a long way in preventing any unintentional drips on the floor.

Step 2: Place in an Outside Bin

Once your kid has mastered the art of bag-tying, the next adventure awaits outside.

  • Locating the Outside Bin If your outside bin isn’t visible from the door, take a short walk with your child and show them where it’s situated. For instance, it might be by the side of the house or in a designated trash area. Above all, ensure they know the importance of closing the bin lid after they’re done.
  • Deposit and Done: Guide them on how to lift the bin lid and carefully place the trash bag inside. Subsequently, after that, ensure the bag sits firmly at the bottom. Likewise, this helps in making space for future trash bags. Ensure they close the lid tightly to keep critters out and prevent trash from blowing away.
